Pamir Highway: history buffs, adrenaline junkies, hippie travellers unite on Central Asia’s most famous road.
For me it was more for the history and culture than it was for the off-the-beaten-track road trip. Because whilst the highway is still relatively obscure, most travellers in the region would have come for this.
Here are some information nuggets to distinguish yourself from others. The Pamir Highway is only a section of the M41, with the former starting in Khorog and ending in Osh. The start of the M41 however, is disputed, but most commonly assumed to be Dushanbe. It also ends in Osh. The Soviets built it in the 1800s for the Great Game against the British. It was most certainly not a game, but a rivalry that resulted in several wars.
