Talk about national oddities- Tajikistan stands out by not fitting in. They may be the poorest country in Central Asia, but its people, history and geography do not disappoint. Once under the rule of Alexander the Great, this is where the Turkic culture of Central Asia gives way to the influence of Persia. Even today, the Pamiri people who inhabit the eastern half of Tajikistan claim to be descendants of the famous King.
The legendary Pamir Highway brought me to this neck of the rugged mountains. Add a little spice in the form of coronavirus, and bam! There is a trip to remember.
